Removal of the Water Pollutant Ciprofloxacin Using Biodegradable Sorbent Polymers Obtained from Polysaccharides

Water use has been increasing globally by 1% per year, and recycling re-use are critical issues compromised the presence of pollutants. In this context, design novel materials and/or procedures for large scale-removal pollutants must be economically environmentally feasible in order to considered as part solution emerging economies. We demonstrate that cross-linking biodegradable polysaccharides such starch, dextrin, or dextrin β-cyclodextrin with divinyl sulfone is an innovative strategy synthesizing insoluble eco-friendly sorbent polymers, including pSt, pDx pCD-Dx. The evaluation these polymers’ ability remove ciprofloxacin (CIP), a prime example antibiotic pollution, revealed Kd 1469 L/kg removal rate higher than 92%, favorable material. Its sorption pH-dependent enhanced at mildly alkaline pH, allowing desorption (i.e., cleaning) reuse pSt through friendly treatment 20 mM AcONa pH 4.6. facts (i) shows high affinity CIP even NaCl concentrations, (ii) can obtained from affordable starting materials, (iii) synthesized regenerated organic, solvent-free make sustainable material inland water seawater remediation, especially less developed countries, due its simplicity low cost.
